POLL - Should editor be fired over f*ck Bush article?

Wed Sep 26, 2007 at 10:43:27 PM PDT

On Friday, The Rocky Mountain Collegian ran a four-word editorial that read: "Taser this . . . F--- Bush." National radio talk shows, CNN and MSNBC have since buzzed with debate about free-speech rights and the bounds of propriety.

Local college Republicans are now trying to get the editor of this student newspaper fired (article).

A daily newspaper in Boulder, CO is now running an online poll asking if he should be fired.   Unfortunately, at this moment the editor is losing.   Let's help him out.  VOTE NOW.

Greens & Dems: Can we end the progressive infighting?

Tue May 02, 2006 at 02:26:49 PM PDT

Oh my goodness, the flame wars Daily Kos has seen over Green and Democratic Party relations.  All this fighting amongst progressives is not helping defeat the Rethuglicans.

Both parties have valid perspectives, and I contend that both Democrats and Greens can do better.  One thing is true: the answer is not the destruction of either party, for at least one reason (starting with the basics: that just ain't gonna happen).

In this diary I lay out some observations about Green/Dem party relations from the perspective of someone who has voted for candidates from both parties.  Let's see if we can find some positive, constructive ways we can move forward.

Madonna Curses Bush at Coachella

Mon May 01, 2006 at 01:40:01 PM PDT

Yesterday Madonna performed at the Coachella Festival in California, which attracted over 100,000 fans to the sold-out 2 day event.  Coachella is a huge deal for rock fans, with dozens of bands playing, including Depeche Mode, tool, Scissor Sisters, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Daft Punk and Sleater-Kinney.

Here's a report from a Madonna fan site:

There was a great I Love New York/Ray of light bit with Madge playing the guitar. 'If you don't like my attitude,' she sang, 'then you can fuck off.' Which made the audience go crazy. 'Just go to Texas, AND SUCK GEORGE BUSH'S DICK!' Which got the craziness really going.

Is it me, or is Bush so wildly unpopular that public figures feel completely free to bash him right & left?  I can't imagine this happening in 2003.  What's also funny is that although this is all over Madonna fan sites, most media covering her performance at Coachella doesn't mention it.

I don't get it... this sounds pretty newsworthy to me!

CA-11: Pombo's pro-choice, anti-war GOP challenger

Thu Apr 27, 2006 at 04:34:45 PM PDT

An antiwar, pro-choice environmentalist is running against the worst member of Congress in Northern California. And they're both Republicans.

This diary draws attention to several fascinating articles about the primary battle facing GOP Rep. Richard Pombo in Northern California's CA-11 district, all published this week by the San Francisco Bay Guardian.

Madonna Calls Bush & Blair on Their Lies (w/ Poll)

Fri Apr 07, 2006 at 02:40:47 PM PDT

It's no secret that Madonna can't stand George Bush.

In 2004 she endorsed Wesley Clark in an impassioned letter to her fans, saying at the time that "the future I wish for my children is at risk."  A year earlier her American Life video was was pulled from distribution for being too anti-Bush in the weeks leading up to the Iraq invasion.

And now, Madonna is saying that Bush and Blair "can tell a thousand lies."  Get the audio yourself, courtesy of Sly Ciccone, below the fold...

Support gay adoption! FREEP THIS POLL

Wed Mar 22, 2006 at 11:58:29 AM PDT

The San Francisco Board of Supervisors has courageously taken a stand against the Vatican's misguided policy that forbids gay couples from adopting needy children.

According the San Francisco Chronicle,

San Francisco elected officials, who have tangled with the Catholic Church before, issued a blistering statement Tuesday that calls on the Vatican to overturn its edict that children waiting to be adopted should not be placed with gays and lesbians.

Success Story: An Anti-Torture Action that Worked (w/ Photos)

Mon Mar 20, 2006 at 02:48:02 PM PDT

Color me impressed.  This morning, an inventive group called "Act Against Torture" gained lots of media attention with a street theater piece in downtown San Francisco.  With excellent props and costumes, they achieved a great success: prominent placement on the webpage of the biggest regional daily newspaper, drawing attention to the Bush Administration's shameful torture policies.

Images speak a thousand words, and these protesters did a great job reminding the public today that our country is torturing people in our name.  I felt an immediate, physical reaction to these images: a twist in my stomach & strong feelings of shame that our country has fallen so low.  Act Against Torture's protest reminds me of a classic slogan, which I'll paraphrase as "When the people lead, politicians must follow."
