Bill Maher: Movies Cause Torture?

Sun Oct 15, 2006 at 03:10:33 AM PDT

i found this to be an awkward little bit of moralizing from Mr. Maher.

Remember that term Moynihan coined, "defining deviancy down"? These movies are mainstreaming deviancy. Deviancy now opens nationwide in 3,000 theaters. How can you expect a nation to abide by the Geneva Conventions when 80 percent of our teenagers spend their idle hours playing ultra-gory video games?

FoleyGate: A Study in Vichy Dems Enabling Republicans

Sun Oct 01, 2006 at 05:14:02 PM PDT

This is yet another sad day for the democratic party.  Ever since a clear Dem majority demanded that the Bush Administration take us to war in Iraq -- No... ever since Bill Clinton,.... "Democrat" (yah.  right!) ... gutted the safety net for millions of poverty stricken Americans now put out of work by the Bill Clinton's Global Initiative, the Demos have been sucking at the Universal Teet of Fear. ...

It Can Actually Get Worse

Thu Sep 28, 2006 at 10:07:35 PM PDT

Everyone else has had their say, so I'm going to post my take as well.

First of all.

80% of 55 is more votes than 95% of 45.  i realize right now we're not even looking at 95% of 45.  We're looking at 75% of 45, and so fine, run some primaries.

But none of those primaries are going to get us what we want until we have a majority.  Until we can throw up a bill of our own and not give a shit if some Lieberman dick votes against it cause we got a couple repugs who will be willing to play the Senatorial game when we're in power.

If Kos and Arianna are right, Lamont will lose too

Fri Sep 22, 2006 at 02:31:12 PM PDT

Today, two nationally known bloggers have put forth the idea that unless Democrats make this the central message:

making the case that Iraq is not, as Bush continues to claim, the centerpiece of the war on terror, and has, in fact, compromised America's ability to combat terrorists and protect our homeland.

of 2006 and beyond they will continue to lose.  Doom is predicted for the upcoming elections.

The CT Primary Is About Ned Lamont

Thu Jul 27, 2006 at 11:27:01 PM PDT

What we care about is defeating Joe Lieberman.

There are republicans who we would have supported before supporting Joe Lieberman.

Over the last few days, I've been waiting to see some diaries about Ned Lamont.  Who he is.  What he's all about.  And all that.  I've been to his website and it all sounds pretty decent.  but truth be told, as far as i can tell he's not as direct about troop withdrawal as Murtha and Feingold.

I've been looking for something on the front page.  The Ned Lamont vision!

Why is Lieberman's Position on the War Not Enough??

Mon Jul 24, 2006 at 04:03:07 AM PDT

Over the course of the last three weeks I've noticed that the blogosphere has decided that Joe Lieberman's position on the war is not enough to decide victory for Lamont.  Or rather, it never hurts to add or pile on an argument that has already provided sustainable momentum.

It seemed to me his position on the war was how this started.  His behaviour towards dems who criticized bush's handling of the war sealed his fate.  I know Lamont talks about Lieberman during the Schiavo thing, and there certainly is other criticisms of Joe Lieberman but for the most part, I can't imagine this primary happening without the Iraq War.   And I would be impressed to hear anyone make a convincing case that Lamont would be taking a commanding lead without the Iraq War as a backdrop.

I'm Insane With Rage

Fri Jul 21, 2006 at 11:46:27 PM PDT

Beneath all this, there runs a lurking comedy.  The brothers hear noises and, blaming local troublemakers, arrange to bawl them out; when Graham admits he is hopeless at cursing, Merrill tells him to go insane with rage, whereupon Graham runs around the outside of the house shouting, "I'm insane with rage," which is almost too bizarre to be funny.

Joe Lieberman Mulls Over Impeaching Bush

Wed Jul 19, 2006 at 11:41:14 PM PDT

Over the last 24 hours I have seen our zeal to help Ned Lamont defeat Joe Lieberman -- and believe me, this is a most noble goal -- reflect badly on the blogosphere.

Basically, there's enough of an argument to defeat Joe without making shit up.

So why are we making shit up??

Post Debate Thoughts

Fri Jul 07, 2006 at 12:04:07 AM PDT

I've just finished watching the debate repeated on c-span, and i don't understand why Ned Lamont didn't call Joe Lieberman the liar he is.

Markos and Matt Stoller had already exposed the Joe Lieberman lies in tonight's debate here:

Another Look at Obama, Dems and Religion

Fri Jun 30, 2006 at 01:37:36 AM PDT

I've given a lot of thought over the last two days about Barack Obama's speach about religion and the democratic party.

Just some background.  Last year I posted a diary about Rosalyn Carter visiting Toccoa, GA in 1977.  36 students and faculty at a christian college had died in a flood due to a dam break.  A book was written by some Christian Fundamentalists about the tragedy and Rosalyn Carter wrote the introduction to that book.

DSCC Supporting Tester

Mon Jun 26, 2006 at 07:30:04 AM PDT

I know this means nothing and I guess that means in this forum this diary is a waste of a diary slot.  For that I apologize.  I take some solace in the knowledge that this diary will never take up any space on the recommended diary list.

But alas, I have found myself yet again confronted with an assumption.  This assumption is that Chuck Schumer doesn't like John Tester.

this is a response to this story:

having read it twice -- and neglecting to read the comments in that story, and therefore the story stands on it's own -- i find myself less perturbed by markos's analysis than i thought i would be.

What is Harry Reid's Position on Iraq??

Fri Jun 16, 2006 at 12:30:44 AM PDT

I'm really going to try to make this diary non-confrontational, but, alas, all questions of clarification on iraq are, to some degree, confrontational.  That's politics.  Answering such questions is necessary if we're going to determine wether or not our representatives, employees who work for us, are standing up for our best interests.

In the past, a long time ago really, I asked "Why does Harry Reid get a Free Pass?"  And I'll abandon that approach.  The answer is pretty clear, anyway.  He has reached out to Markos and the netroots in general.  His involvement at Ykos, it is clear that when it comes to people powered politics, he gets it, the importance of engaging the forum directly, even if he may not agree with the netroots on a specific issue as large and as life threatening as iraq.

The key word in that last sentence is "may".  Cause the point of this diary is that I simply do not know either way.

I Was Wrong

Sun Jun 11, 2006 at 01:57:10 AM PDT

A week ago i posted a diary that illustrated, if i may brag a little bit, quite well the endless cycle of the revolutionary spirit.

is it so much revolution for the sake of revolution or just a ritualistic cleansing, the constant need... the obsessive-compulsiveness to ratify our own purity over and over again??

Many Examples of Truth; One Example of Politics

Wed Jun 07, 2006 at 07:33:03 AM PDT

the following could be thought of as an open letter to Senator Russ Feingold.  But it's also an attempt to provide some examples of people speaking truth, and to contrast that with an example of politics.

Dear Senator Feingold,

this is truth:

The federal marriage amendment, which would write discrimination into the Constitution, is an obvious attempt to change the subject from topics that the Congress should be addressing to a hot button social issue intended to appeal to certain factions.

No You Won't Fool the Children of the Revolution

What drove the Terror was not a crazed intellectual desire to extend the Revolution to every corner of existence but a desperate desire to maintain its achievements in the face of opposition.
